CBD for Pain

31 products

For people who train, work on their feet, or want something to build into a recovery routine. The collection splits two ways: topicals you apply where you want them, and ingestibles you take on a schedule. Both are third-party lab tested by batch.

Topical or ingestible?

This is the first decision and the two are not interchangeable.

  • A topical goes on the skin, where you put it. Most of the ones here also carry menthol or camphor, which produce a cooling or warming sensation of their own. That sensation is part of what you are buying, and it is worth knowing before you buy it.
  • An ingestible is taken on a schedule rather than applied to a spot. Capsules and gummies give a fixed amount; a tincture lets you adjust in fractions of a milliliter.

Plenty of people use both, a topical during the day and an ingestible as a routine. They do different jobs.

How to choose

  • On a topical, look at the total CBD in the tin or tube and at what else is in the formula. Menthol, camphor and arnica are common and they are the active-feeling part.
  • On an ingestible, look at the CBG. It is the cannabinoid brands pair with CBD in recovery formulas, and the amount varies from a token 2mg to a one-to-one ratio.
  • Check the spectrum if you are drug tested. Some topicals here carry hemp-derived THC in the formula.
  • Read the ingredient list if a product mentions Drug Facts. A few products in this category are over-the-counter medicines that happen to contain CBD, and the active ingredient is not the CBD.

What is in this collection

On the topical side, the CBDfx Muscle and Joint Balm Stick pairs broad spectrum CBD with menthol and camphor in a mess-free stick, at 750mg or 3,000mg. Canna River's Body Balm holds 5,000mg of CBD, CBC, CBG and CBN in a 2oz tin across four botanical formulas, two of them cooling or warming and two not. The JustCBD Ultra Relief Gel is a 4oz menthol gel in 1,000mg or 5,000mg, with hemp-derived THC in the formula.

On the ingestible side, Canna River pairs CBD with CBG across gummies, softgels and tinctures: 50mg of each per gummy, 83mg of CBD and 42mg of CBG per milliliter in the Pain tincture, and 15,000mg of CBD with 5,000mg of CBG in the Ultra bottle. Medterra Daily Relief uses CBD isolate at 25mg or 50mg per capsule with no THC at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CBD balm and a CBD cream?

The base. A balm is wax and oil, thicker and slower to absorb, and it stays where you put it. A cream is water-based and sinks in faster. A gel sits between the two and usually carries menthol.

Why do CBD topicals contain menthol and camphor?

They produce the cooling or warming sensation people associate with these products. In several of them, menthol and camphor are the declared active ingredients under Drug Facts and the CBD is listed as an inactive one. The product page says which.

What is CBG and why is it in recovery products?

Cannabigerol, a minor cannabinoid that hemp produces in small amounts. Brands pair it with CBD in the formulas they position for recovery. What matters when comparing them is the amount: a one-to-one ratio is a different product from a token 2mg.

Do CBD topicals contain THC?

Some do. The JustCBD Ultra Relief Gel carries hemp-derived THC in the formula. Most of the others are broad spectrum with none detected. It is stated on every product page.

Can I use a topical and a capsule at the same time?

They are different formats doing different things, and people often do. If you take other medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first rather than a store.
